Europhoria

Euro 2008 is here. When I found out that it would take place in Switzerland during my stay, I was quite excited to see up close the phenomenon that is European football.

What’s the cure for Panini fever?

It’s not long now until the start of the European football championships here in Switzerland. You can’t escape it: on TV, in the papers, and in the ubiquitous Panini sticker albums.

During the last World Cup, Switzerland bought more football stickers per capita than any other nation: a staggering 40 for every man, woman, and child in the country. When you consider how many people have no interest whatsoever in football stickers, the rest of the country must be buying an awful lot of them…
