I confess that I recycled on a Sunday. It was the night after a party; lots of bottles, you know how it is. I gave it a lot of thought.
I waited until the afternoon. I enlisted a partner in crime and went to recycling bins in a business district. I felt these were a series of decisions that embraced the spirit of being quiet.

I have spent the last four and a half years learning how to do something extremely hard for an American: nothing.

At first, Sundays in Switzerland were painful. No one did anything and stores weren’t open and this made me feel extremely nervous. (more…)

The other day I was pondering why some people move abroad while others never venture more than 50 miles from home.

Why, for example, am I living 5,000 miles from my hometown while some of my friends are content to be teachers at the very same high school they graduated from?
